ULA success takes Amazon Leo to 331

A successful launch aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket saw an additional 29 Amazon Leo satellites placed into their transfer orbits. This latest launch takes the overall total of Amazon Leo craft in orbit to more than 330. ULA has launched 197 of that overall number. However, Amazon’s goal is to place 3,236 satellites in total.

The recent catastrophic explosion of a Blue Origin New Glenn rocket is a potential set-back for Amazon which had booked many New Glenn launches. The New Glenn solution is seen as being ideal for Amazon in that each New Glenn can carry 48 satellites per launch.

There are reports that Amazon ordered 10 extra launches on May 29th with arch-rival SpaceX on its ultra reliable Falcon 9 rocket.

Amazon started deployment of its fleet in April 2025. The latest mission marks Amazon’s seventh launch on ULA’s Atlas V rocket and twelfth mission overall, bringing the total number of satellites deployed to 331.

The Atlas V deployed the satellites at an altitude of approximately 289 miles (465 kms) above Earth, after which the Amazon Leo team assumed control of the mission from its mission operations centre in Redmond, Washington. Teams have completed initial contact and health checks and will continue preparing the satellites to raise to their assigned operational altitude of 392 miles (630 kms).

Amazon has booked launches with Arianespace, as well as SpaceX, ULA and New Glenn.
