Brazil authorises AST SpaceMobile for LEO coverage

Brazil telecommunications regulator Anatel has issued authorisation to satellite-to-device operator AST SpaceMobile permission to operate 248 orbital satellites. The permission was granted to AST & Science Do Brazil Ltda, a Brazilian subsidiary of the Texas-based business.

The constellation would use S-band and Q and V-band for its ‘feeder’ transmissions. Specifically, Anatel granted AST access to 10×10 MHz of S-Band Spectrum in the 1980-2010 and 2170-2200 range.

However, these frequencies (1990-2000/2180-2190MHz) are forbidden by the FCC and would violate the FCC’s order, and this restriction includes the US and “outside of the US” according to the FCC.

The Anatel authorisation admits that the S-band has high demand and requires future “channel allocation review”.

The permission is granted until September 19, 2039 although this also depends on the German regulatory body granting its authorisation and this could mean a shorter period than that already in place from the FCC.
