Swiss semi-conductor and chipset manufacturer ST Microelectronics (STM) says it has delivered 7.5 billion integrated circuit chipsets to SpaceX’s Starlink since 2021. It added that its low Earth orbit-based revenues are now $600 million annually, and this segment will grow to $3 billion in 2030 with around 200 million user terminals deployed.
Headquartered in Switzerland, STM is a major European manufacturer of STM32 microcontrollers, power electronics, and sensors. The company is a key supplier for space applications, including SpaceX’s Starlink.
STM says its low Earth orbit supplies of chips has grown 36 per cent per year since 2021, from $175 million in 2021 to about $600 million in 2025.
Remi El-Ouazzane, STM’s president of micro controllers, digital ICs and RF products, commented: “STM and SpaceX is a decade-long partnership, with key tech for satellite and user terminals. ST products have been critical in helping SpaceX scale production — designing chips, engineering services and high-volume manufacturing with the use of multiple STM products across the Starlink constellation.”
“If you look at our total SAM [serviceable addressable market] over the next five years, our numbers are more influenced by our market share in SpaceX rather than the success of another LEO constellation,” he added.
The company, as well as having Amazon Leo and Europe’s IRIS2 in its sights, is also focusing on prospects of supply chipsets to China for its upcoming low Earth orbiting constellations.
