Namibia rejects Starlink
March 24, 2026

Namibia, with a population of some 3.1 million, is one of the planet’s most sparsely populated countries. Despite a possible need for better communications, it has denied SpaceX’s Starlink broadband service a licence to operate in the region.
The denial appeared in a notice in the Southern African country’s government gazette. The notice, dated March 23rd, did not state why Starlink’s applications were declined.
In November 2024, the Namibian regulator hit Starlink with a cease-and-desist order, saying it had been operating in the country without a licence. The equipment had been smuggled across Namibia’s borders. The government also warned consumers against purchasing Starlink equipment and said it had confiscated illegal terminals from consumers.
Starlink is also having difficulty gaining a licence to operate in adjacent South Africa.
