European permanent IP technology lab for broadcast apps

March 27, 2025

Unitecnic, part of Grup Mediapro, and Nevion, a subsidiary of the Sony group, strengthen their collaboration with the inauguration of the first permanent laboratory for Networked Live in Spain.

The event, which took place on March 19th, was held at Unitecnic’s headquarters in Madrid, where the lab is situated and will remain available on request.

The goal of this lab is to create a multi-vendor environment using core components of Sony’s Networked Live ecosystem, in particular the Nevion VideoIPath media orchestration platform. This key component is widely used by broadcasters and telecommunications service providers around the world in applications as diverse as contribution, remote production, studios, mobile units and GCCG (ground-cloud-cloud-ground). VideoIPath is also an open system that allows integration into existing environments, with interfaces to any device and equipment, and support for existing control surfaces.

“Due to its ability to efficiently manage dynamic resource allocation, VideoIPath enables seamless operation between on-prem and cloud devices, integrating solutions from vendors such as Grass Valley, Techex, Kiloview, TAG and Telestream. This approach optimises bandwidth and cloud connectivity, enabling more agile, flexible and scalable production,” commented Miguel Gallardo, Head of Technology at Unitecnic Madrid.

VideoIPath can natively orchestrate advanced cloud workflows and thanks to the latest software releases, the new resource routing concept automates and greatly simplifies cloud connectivity, allowing operators to route signals to cloud resources as if they were local. The system automatically assigns the necessary procedures for multi-hop signal routing and conversion as needed as demonstrated by SRT connections between Kiloview and Techex devices during the event in Madrid.

In addition, the new dynamic resource orchestration functionality allows software media in the cloud or on-premises to be switched on and off as needed for these workflows which has been demonstrated with the Techex Edge integration and is also possible with the Sony M2L-X mixer.

Finally, VideoIPath now has native support for SRT streams and connection modes as demonstrated with TAG multi-screen integration, as well as NDI source detection and routing of NDI signals between cloud resources.

This functionality complements the existing support for handling JPEG XS and HEVC compressed transport connections for ground-to-cloud transmission provided by Nevion Virtuoso.

Oscar Garcia, Senior Solution Architect, Nevion said: “One of the most interesting aspects of the lab is that attendees were able to attend a real-time demo of most of the web-controllable systems and discover an extended workflow integrating software on generic servers on the ground and software in the Amazon Web Services cloud with the latest Nevion VideoIPath for orchestration and monitoring.”

“We are very satisfied with the reception of the lab, and both customers and the other manufacturers participating in the lab welcome the initiative as it is a very valuable tool when making decisions and exploring use cases based on IP technology,” added Marta Bragado, Account Manager Sales South, Sony Europe.
