Premier League finale sees record data peak on Virgin Media O2
May 24, 2022

The frenetic final showdown of the Premier League on May 22nd resulted in the highest ever data traffic peak on the Virgin Media O2 mobile network.
With fans transfixed by unfolding drama, they took to their phones to stream, socialise, check scores and share their feelings as it unfolded. The rare occasion – when all matches were played at the same time, with multiple outcomes still to be decided – resulted in an unprecedented peak in traffic as people constantly sought updates.
As Manchester City pipped Liverpool to the title in dramatic fashion, Virgin Media O2 customers up and down the country caused a 10 per cent surge in mobile data traffic, based on the same time the previous week. The activity resulted in one of the biggest single spikes in traffic the mobile network has ever experienced.
Emma Evans, Head of Network Experience at Virgin Media O2, said: “We’ve invested heavily in our network to ensure we can keep customers connected during busy times such as this, and I’m proud that we’ve helped fans enjoy the day by watching and sharing their experiences. As a Leeds fan myself, I was riding a wave of emotions throughout the afternoon so I know how people across the UK were relying on their mobile devices to stay updated.”
