Spain: Cut-throat football war continues
August 23, 2021
From David Del Valle in Madrid
In an attempt to boost pay-TV football subscribers in Spain, Movistar and Orange are giving away incentives including smart TVs, mobile phones and huge discounts.
Movistar is offering the choice of a free smart TV or smartphone to those subscribers paying for a convergent package. The operator needs to recoup the €900 million it paid for football rights and that requires a significant increase on its current 1.5 million football subscribers.
Orange, meanwhile, is offering a discount of €25 each month over six months (totalling €150), in an attempt to increase its 700,000 subscribers.
