Elisa Viihde remakes BBC’s The Replacement for Viaplay
April 19, 2021
Filming of Elisa Viihde’s new original series, The Replacement, has begun in the metropolitan area of Helsinki. Based on the 2017 hit BBC drama, this new adaptation will be available on the Elisa Viihde Viaplay streaming service in 2022.
An intense psychological thriller about the fear of losing one’s professional and personal life, The Replacement will be a three-part series based on the mini-series of the same name, created by Joe Ahearne and Nicole Cauverien and produced by Left Bank Pictures. It was shown on the BBC and starred Vicky McClure. The Finnish version is produced by Helsinki-filmi Ltd, and is directed by Jyri Kähönen.
The domestic version is scripted by Mia Ylönen and Tuuli Hostikka and the leading roles are played by Maria Ylipää, Pamela Tola and Olavi Uusivirta. Sara Paavolainen and Eero Saarinen feature in other key roles. Sony Pictures Television manages the rights of the series and is in charge of its international sales.
“Covid-19 pandemic grew the demand for quality series, and we were looking for new ways to produce them. As a localised, Finnish adaptation of BBC’s original drama, The Replacement is a good example of experimenting a new way of production by a mini-series,” said Ani Korpela, Head of Content Business at Elisa Viihde.
