Amazon is widely reported to be relaunching its Prime Video OTT service in India. Netflix is already present in the market as well as dozens of other OTT offerings including the well-established Hotstar service.
The new business HQ will be based in Mumbai, and the company is currently hiring senior staff.
Hotstar currently leads in terms of availability, but Reliance’s JIO TV service is also widely distributed and is available pre-bundled with Jio’s low-cost cellular phones.
Hotstar has a 28/29 per cent market share, while Jio has 23 per cent of the market. Netflix currently holds only about 5 per cent of the market.
