India wants new TV ratings system

India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) wants to update and possibly revise its existing TV audience measurement and ratings system. TRAI has issued a consultation paper for stakeholder comments on the existing Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) rules, and whether the process needs revision.
TRAI has indicated that while most users are happy with BARC there are suggestions that it needs to be made more robust and to take into better account today’s changing media landscape.
There are also concerns that some TV news channels are showing non-news programming which should be measured and categorised in other genres given that popular programming captures more viewers and thus affects the overall TV rating.
Comments must be submitted to TRAI by January 16th.
