Amazon picks Madrid for Prime production hub
December 4, 2018
From David del Valle in Madrid
Amazon is reportedly seeking a location in Spain, probably in Madrid, to set up its first big production hub in Europe following the example of Netflix.
El Español reports that the company has been negotiating with several Spanish producers and a decision will be taken over the coming weeks. The production hub, the first outside the US, will be in coordination with the European company’s headquarters in London.
Amazon aims to compete head-to-head with Netflix in a country where it already has 650,000 subscribers to its Prime Video Service versus Netflix’s two million. Amazon are closing deals with Orange, Vodafone and Movistar to distribute its OTT service on the platforms.
Amazon is replicating Netflix strategy in the market. A few months ago Netflix announced the creation of its first production hub in Europe, located in La Ciudad de la Tele, a new campus of 22,000m2 in Tres Cantos, Madrid, currently under construction and managed by audiovisual production services specialist Grupo Secuoya.
