Subhash Chandra-backed VoD platform ZEE5, already available to some 190 countries, says it intends buying and commissioning local content in Phas 2 of its global expansion plan.
According to India web-site TelevisionPost the service’s chief business officer, Archana Anand says that within the next 6 months the OTT is intending to be the largest “language platform” globally, and a Top Two platform in terms of brand and recall for South Asian viewers.
ZEE5 is a ‘freemium’ service, with various categories of content and where the premium content is behind a pay wall. ‘Western’ markets will pay $7-$10 a month for access.
“Definitely our TV shows and dramas have a lot of love across the globe. Movies is another important genre,” said Anand. “Regional, whether it is Marathi or Bengali shows do really well. We are confident now that our originals will be well received and we are taking our originals across languages.”
