July 18, 2018
From Branislav Pekic in Rome
The 2018 World Cup has been a resounding success for Italian commercial broadcaster Mediaset, despite Italy not qualifying for the tournament. Mediaset transmitted live and free-to-air all 64 matches of the competition for the first time in its history.
The cumulative audience for all the matches was 297 million viewers, 49 million more (+19.7 per cent) compared to the previous World Cup when the Italian national football team took part, broadcast by RAI and Sky Italia.
The July 15th final pitting France against Croatia was seen by 11.68 million viewers (66.58 per cent share), while the average day time audience was 3.81 million (30.7 per cent share) and in prime time 7.13 million (34.19 per cent share).
Mediaset also reported over 35 million views for matches live on the web and on mobile devices. An estimated 20 million unique users accessed Mediaset’s digital content for Russia 2018, with over 600,000 downloads of the official Mediaset FIFA 2018 World app.
