ViaSat claims “fastest” satellite broadband

Satellite operator ViaSat of Carlsberg, California, says it has introduced the USA’s fastest satellite internet business service, with download speeds available from 35 Mb/s to 100 Mb/s dependent on location.
ViaSat’s ‘Inside ViaSat’ blog, issued June 26, stated: “The upgraded business service is made possible by our new ViaSat-2 satellite, the highest-capacity communications satellite in the world. Our improved technology in the sky and on the ground means businesses don’t have to endure slow speeds and data caps.”
Because it comes from a satellite, ViaSat says it can connect even the most remote locations, filling in coverage gaps where others can’t reach. It also provides businesses everywhere, even in urban locations, with a more resilient back-up connection, so they are protected from a lapse in service due to a cut utility line or other emergency.
ViaSat’s commercial plans can be structured to allow unlimited access, or can be priced on a metered plan. Fees start at $50 a month.
ViaSat has established an office in Dublin, Ireland, as part of its expansion plan for Europe and in addition to R&D facilities in Amsterdam, Holland and Farnborough, UK. The operator is using Boeing to build two new high throughput satellites, one of which will be for Europe (ViaSat-3).
