CNMC: DTT TVs will lose 30% capacity with migration
June 21, 2018
From David Del Valle in Madrid
The Spanish regulatory body CNMC has warned that the second digital dividend will see DTT operators lose 30 per cent of their capacity.
The release of the 700 MHz band to the benefit of 5G services – a migration to be completed in 2020 if no moratorium- is likely to put at risk the new HD and UHD services as the DTT operators will have 30 per cent spectrum less than they currently hold.
To avoid this, the CNMC has urged the Spanish government and the country’ operators to take the necessary decisions to rationalise the used formats and carry out a technological overhaul on DTT to improve the spectrum efficiency.
The CNMC points out that the SD transmissions will become non-existent in a very short time with operators moving to HD and UHD.
