Star and Airtel make amends

India’s broadcasting giant Star India has agreed a peace deal with DTH operator Airtel Digital TV and the two have signed a fresh agreement which gives Airtel subscribers access to Star’s output, including its all-important sports coverage.
“Airtel Digital subscribers will continue to get uninterrupted access to all of Star’s programmes including Vivo IPL, following an agreement reached between Star and Airtel. Both parties would like to assure their subscribers that the two companies are committed to bringing more and more high-quality content and experience to their consumers,” the two parties said in a joint statement.
The Vivo IPL elements cover the Indian Premier League cricket games due to start on April 7th.
The previous agreement expired last October and the two had been instructed by India’s Disputes regulator to either reach a deal or it would enforce its ‘Reference Interconnect Offer’ (RIO), a formal position which sets out the matters under dispute, including pricing and which permits carriage of channels, pending agreement.
