The proliferation of pay-TV operators in Spain, and the increasingly growth of their penetration in the market, are boosting domestic TV production, easing the creation of new TV producers and opening a new exploitation window for traditional linear TV companies, such as Mediaset and Atresmedia.
Atresmedia, operator of Antena 3 and La Sexta among others, has set up a new production company ‘Atresmedia Studios’ to produce and distribute TV series for pay-TV platforms including Movistar or Netflix. It aims to produce exclusive content both on a national and international level for “new operators and new distribution platforms”.
“We will invest in projects specifically developed for each operator”, said Ignacio Corrales, director of Atresmedia Studios. The studio is will soon launch TV series El embarcadero on Movistar Plus, and Atresmedia has already distributed La Casa de Papel on Netflix.
Mediaset, operator of Tele 5 and Cuatro, is also taking advantage of the market and has accordingly reached a production agreement with Sony Pictures Television. Mediapro is also producing and distributing TV series and programmes on Amazon, Netflix and HBO. Movistar Plus has also created its own production company relying on domestic TV productions to capture subscribers.
