Mediaset back in the black
November 8, 2017
From Branislav Pekic in Rome
Italian commercial broadcaster Mediaset ended the first nine months of 2017 with a net profit of €35.9 million, a turnaround on the loss of €118 million a year earlier.
The positive performance was achieved thanks to both the increase in the advertising market share and the fall in operating costs.
Net revenues amounted to €2.53 billion (€2.56 billion in 9M 2016), of which €1.83 billion in Italy (2016: €1.85 billion) and €701.3 million in Spain (2016: €711.7 million). These figures were impacted by a slowdown in the advertising markets in both countries.
Gross advertising revenues in Spain were €689.3 million, slightly down on the previous year, while in Italy they grew by 0.8 per cent to €1.42 billion.
In Italy, Mediaset is the leader in the 15-64 age-range with a 32.9 per cent share in the 24-hours with Canale 5 the most popular channel in all time slots. In Spain, Mediaset España’s channels maintained their absolute leadership in the 24-hours with a 29.1 per cent share. Telecinco is still the most popular channel in both daytime and in prime time.
