YouTube living room viewing up 70%
October 27, 2017
YouTube is making real headway into living rooms. The online video portal says users are watching 100 million hours of its clips a day through TV sets – a 70 per cent increase over the last 12 months.
The stats come courtesy of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, speaking during Google parent Alphabet’s earnings call. A Google rep later confirmed that he was talking about TVs connected to the Internet, either directly or via devices like set-top-boxes or gaming consoles.
This marks the first time Google has specifically referenced the total watch time on connected TVs and other living room devices. Earlier this year, the company revealed that it now sees more than 1 billion hours of watch time across all devices. This means that viewing on TV is now accounting for around 10 per cent of all YouTube vieweing time.
