Mediaset challenges La Liga on match day access
March 3, 2017
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Mediaset Spain, operator of Tele 5 and Cuatro among other channels, is taking La Liga football to the competition watchdog CNMC for prohibiting its TV crews and cameras from entering football stadiums to record atmospherics during the matches.
The group has filed a complaint and urged the CNMC to step in on the issue. Currently, after the acquisition of the TV rights from beIN Sports, Mediaset can only broadcast a 90 minute highlight package the matches, but Mediaset would like to add more pictures in their programmes with the sound recordings from the stadiums.
The conflict between both parties dates back to 2015 when Mediaset filed a complaint against La Liga because at that time the group could only broadcast 90 minutes of highlights every weekend and managed to get 90 minutes per football match.
