February 3, 2017
From Pascale Paoli-Lebailly in Paris
2016 was a good year for TV sets sales in France, with 6.5 million units sold. Boosted by the Euro 2016 football tournament, sales jumped by 1.4 million compared to 2015, according to figures released by GfK. Sales will decrease in 2017 with 5.3 million sold units, predicts GfK – with two thirds of sales being 4K and Smart TV sets.
GfK explains that secondary TV sets were renewed last year at an average price dropping from €420 in 2015 to €385 in 2016. The market, however, achieved revenues at €2.4 billion, up 16 per cent over one year.
The HD switchover (in 2015) also aided more sales for HD adaptors, DVD recorders and remote controls, for a total of around €700 million.
TV sets and decoders excluded, the French consumer electronic market saw a 2 per cent decline last year to €15.5 billon, but still ahead of other Western European countries.
GfK also estimates the French SVOD market jumped by 36 per cent in 2016 to €109 million.
