Italian DTT network operator Persidera has been awarded a contract to provide multiplex capacity for the Holy See (Vatican City State).
The contract was awarded by Italy’s Ministry of Economic Development to the only bidder, after a national tender procedure.
It foresees the provision, to the Holy See, of 4 Mbps of transmission capacity on a DTT multiplex until 2032, with coverage of at least of 70 per cent of Italy.
The procedure follows the commitments made between Italy and the Holy See with regard to TV and radio broadcasting in an agreement signed in June 2010.
It is expected that the DTT capacity will be used by the Holy See to expand coverage of religious channel TV2000 and possibly for the launch of a second TV channel.
Persidera is 70 per cent owned by Telecom Italia Media and will earn €2.15 million per year from the Italian State for the contract.
