Mediaset 4K channel for Champions League final
May 17, 2016
From Branislav Pekic in Rome
Italian pay-TV broadcaster Mediaset Premium is to launch the country’s first sports channel in Ultra HD technology.
Mediaset Premium Sport 4K will be available on the Mediaset 1 DTT multiplex (channel 391) and will officially launch on May 28th, with a live broadcast of the UEFA Champions League final in Milan between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
In order to watch the match in 4K, viewers must be subscribed to the pre-paid service of Mediaset Premium and, specifically, the UEFA Champions League option. In addition, a Premium SmartCam or HDCam will be required as the existing Mediaset Premium set-top boxes are not compatible with 4K transmissions, as well as a 4K TV set capable of receiving content broadcast in HEVC 50p.
Mediaset, as host broadcaster, will also air the UEFA Champions League final in HD and free-to-air on Canale 5 HD.
It is not known at this moment whether Mediaset will use the channel to broadcast other sports events in 4K technology in the future.
