April 5, 2016
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Pay-TV viewing in Spain already represents 20 per cent of all TV consumption with Spaniards increasingly watching TV, including FTA channels, through pay-TV platforms.
A report from the consultancy firm Barlovento Comunicación reveals that the wide plethora of pay-TV platforms (Movistar, Vodafone, Orange, cable companies) and pay streaming services are driving the growth and increasing the consumption of above all cinema, TV series, football and documentaries.
Telefónica’s Movistar Plus leads the market with 3.7 million clients with its customers dedicating an average of one fourth of their time watching pay-TV content, up 13 per cent year-on-year. Telefónica’s OTT service Yomvi is giving a definite boost to this growth with 15 million downloads a month.
Overall, Spaniards daily spent 239 minutes in front of the television in March, albeit down 12 minutes compared with February.
