Spain: Orange to sell Smart TVs to boost pay-TV
November 20, 2015
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Orange Spain plans to start selling Smart TVs at reduced rates from December 1st in a bid to compete with Telefonica and boost take-up of its convergent services.
However, unlike Telefonica, which will give away Smart TVs connected to the company’s Movistar+ service alone, Orange will sell “unlocked” Samsung and LG sets with screen sizes ranging from 32 to 43 inches.
The company will provide discounts of up to 35 per cent with 24-month payment plans being offered to subscribers to the operator’s Canguro convergent tariffs, as well as to Jazztel broadband customers.
Orange had 215,000 pay-TV subscribers at 30 September and recently reached a deal with Rakuten’s VoD subsidiary Wuaki.tv to offer the streaming service’s entire catalogue to its pay-TV customers at no extra cost until May 2016.
