La Liga launches bid process for TV rights to 2019
November 16, 2015
From David Del Valle in Madrid
The TV rights to the top Spanish Leagues for the period 2016-2019 have opened for bids. They must be submitted by 2 December for the broadcast rights to packages of La Liga’s first and second divisions and the Copa del Rey for seasons 2016-2017, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.
This is the first time that an open bidding process has been called for the whole football TV rights since a centralised sales system has been approved.
There will be a single free-to-air (FTA) match, scheduled on Fridays, and only free-to-air networks can submit a bid for it. There will also be recaps of 90 seconds per game available for every network.
Rights are split into nine different blocks for both FTA and pay-TV, from one single package with one game of each division to a La Liga produced channel with eight live games and the entire Copa del Rey competition. Moreover video-on-demand (VOD) exclusive rights will be available.
