Univision goes OTT too
October 17, 2014
Univision, the Spanish-language broadcaster, is to start live and on-demand streaming for non-subscribers according to the WSJ. There is no word on launch date or pricing for its Uvideos platform. Currently, it is only available to pay TV subscribers that have to log in with their cable or satellite TV account information.
Tonia O’Connor, the broadcaster’s president for content distribution, told WSJ that TV Everywhere “is not reaching all of our viewers” — presumably because Univision itself is available over-the-air for anyone with an antenna in most markets.
O’Connor also said that 76 per cent of Univision’s viewers between the ages of 18 and 49 only watch Univision, and no other network. That’s a huge number, and it could mean that at least a subset of those viewers might be willing to pay to access streaming content from the network.
