RTVE president resigns
September 25, 2014
From David Del Valle in Madrid
The president of the public broadcaster RTVE, Leopoldo González-Echenique, has resigned on the grounds that he has failed to get sufficient state funding to finance the group.
The president had urged the Government to inject €130 million in the company to make it viable and tackle almost €400 million in losses, but the Administration has refused to provide that amount of money endangering the future of RTVE.
Cuts in the state aids, the reduction in the taxes paid by TVs and telco operators and the elimination of advertising revenues have led the company to a cul-de-sac with no alternative for him to continue on the post, two years after his appointment.
