May 29, 2014
From Branislav Pekic in Rome
Portugal Telecom (through its Meo brand), Portuguese public broadcaster RTP and manufacturer Samsung have teamed up for what they claim will be the first global Ultra-HD live broadcast, simultaneously on two platforms (Fibre Optic and Satellite).
The exclusive technology preview will take place during the Portugal vs Greece friendly football match at the Estadio da Luz stadium in Lisbon on May 31st.
The multi-platform broadcast will be delivered OTT via IP on Samsung Ultra-HD Smart TVs using a special Meo UHD app, as well as via satellite, on Meo Ultra HD, encrypted in 50FPS with the new HEVC codec.
The satellite TV signal will be transmitted via Hispasat and received using Samsung Ultra-HD digital receivers (the first prototypes of the MeoBox Ultra HD).
According to Portugal Telecom, the Ultra-HD technology should be commercially launched in Portugal during 2015.
