Mediapro to buy bankrupt TotalChannel?
April 1, 2014
From David Del Valle in Madrid
Spanish media group Mediapro, shareholder in La Sexta channel and owner of football TV rights to Real Madrid and Barcelona, is reportedly negotiating the acquisition of TotalChannel to break into the OTT market.
Launched one year ago, TotalChannel has filed for bankruptcy with 100,000 registered users, according to the company. The OTT service offered 12 premium TV channels at €9.99 a month with over 80 per cent of its subscribers enjoying it through a Smart TV set or through a connected video console.
With the acquisition, Mediapro would enter into a market still in its infancy to compete with other OTT services such as Canal Plus’ Yomvi, Atresmedia’s Nubeox, Wuaki TV or Filming among others.
