Sony axing Crackle UK
March 24, 2014
Sony Pictures Television is shutting down Crackle – its online VoD channel – in the UK.
A message on the Crackle homepage reads: “We’d like to thank all those who have supported and enjoyed Crackle UK. As of April 1, 2014 Crackle’s UK service will no longer be operating.”
The ad-supported VoD service launched in the UK in 2012 streaming original content as well as classic TV series and movies.
Crackle has also been launched in the US, Australia, Canada and Latin America. Sony has not clarified the reasons for axing the online service in the UK and could not verify the status of the other international Crackle services. However, it did affirm its commitment to the US service, which it said is performing well, recently registering 30 million streams in just one month.
