India’s largest DTH operator Dish TV is upping the cost of its standard definition digital set-top boxes. They now cost an extra $4.11, taking the price to $36.98, while the DVR version costs a couple of dollars extra at $38.62. Dish is holding the price of its more expensive HD boxes at Rupees 3099 ($51.50).
Dish’s India rivals are also expected to boost prices with reports that TataSky, Airtel digital TV and Videocon D2H are planning price rises.
The price rises are down to currency exchange rates with the falling value of the Rupee hurting broadcasters. The value of the Rupee has fallen by between 8-10 per cent over recent weeks. Videocon builds its own receivers in India but some key components have to be imported.
