Australian home entertainment retailer JB Hi-Fi has revealed details of a new cloud-based video service known as JB NOW Video, giving consumers the opportunity to download or stream films and TV shows on a number of devices, including PCs, tablets and smartphones.
JB Hi-Fi CEO Terry Smart announced the launch of the service in a presentation at the Macquarie Australia Conference in Sydney. Although it was suggested that the service was “nearing completion”, a streaming site is already live.
JB NOW Video will utilise UltraViolet, allowing consumers to gain access to digital copies of video content when they purchase hard-copy DVDs or Blu-ray discs showing an UltraViolet logo.
JB Hi-Fi is currently advertising a number of major upcoming DVD releases on the NOW Video website, including Gangster Squad, This is 40 and Django Unchained, scheduled for release on 6 June 2013.
The service launch complements the retailer’s existing digital services, including the JB NOW music streaming service (launched December 2011) and its online eBook service (launched April 2013).
