Reinforcing comments made by fellow senior executives at BSkyB as to the broadcaster’s commitment to content production, Sophie Turner Laing, Sky’s Managing Director of Content, has suggested that high-end drama will drive the next stage of its growth.
Delivering a MIPTV ‘Media Mastermind’ keynote speech, she told delegates that “you can give viewers all the technology you want, but unless you back that up with high quality content that people want to watch, you are never going to drive usage.”
“I genuinely believe that this is another golden age of television. There are great shows. People are watching more TV than ever. Why? Because content affects our emotion,” she suggested.
Further highlighting the importance of content, she urged delegates to “spend the precious time we have here together this week discussing the shows, not the pipes. New technology can open up fantastic new opportunities, but it’s the art of storytelling that engages and enthrals audiences.”
