Reports confirm that some North Eastern cable MSO’s have been badly hurt by Hurricane Sandy. Cablevision, in particular, which serves much of New York, New Jersey and Long Island, confirmed it was suffering from power outages and “widespread service interruptions”.
Telco Verizon, which serves New York had half-a-metre of water in its 140 West Street HQ in Lower Manhattan, was also “severely affected due to flooding and power-outages” and had lost two switching centres in the city. Flooding also damaged Verizon head-ends in Queens and on Long Island, and hitting the company’s FiOS, broadband and telephony systems. Water damage also affected Verizon’s back-up generators and battery banks.
Time Warner Cable, another New York MSO, said there were no significant problems other than power outages.
