Halton: ‘YouView throws down gauntlet’

Describing YouView as “delighted” with industry reception to the UK open IPTV platform since the launch of its first STB in July, Richard Halton, CEO, has confirmed that looking forward, the service is looking to extend the range of on-demand content, particularly in terms of opening the door to smaller content providers who want to go ‘over-the-top’ to customers and provide streaming channels, “whether that’s arts, sport or other organisations,” he told delegates at the Future of Digital Media Distribution 2012 conference in London.
Revealing that the first upgrade to the core functionality of the platform would take place on October 30th, Halton said that YouView, and platforms like it, “threw down the gauntlet” to many of the delegates in the room. He said that YouView saw video over IP as a “huge opportunity” enabling networks to plan capacity.
He also noted that it had enabled the operation’s ISP partners – BT and Talk Talk – to offer triple play bundles to compete with players such as Sky and Virgin Media.
