Thaicom moves into profit

Thailand’s satellite operator Thaicom has declared a profit for its H1 trading, and says that operating profits were Thai Baht 198 million (about $6.2 million) which almost matches a THB 192 million operating loss in the same period last year.
Thaicom, once known as Shin Satellite, said the about-turn is almost entirely due to its satellite operations which saw y-o-y revenue growth of 17.5 per cent, up from THB 2. 6 billion to THB 3.06 billion, and which comprised some 80 per cent of the operator’s revenues.
H1 revenue growth was helped by its latest satellite in the shape of Thaicom-5, as well as addition business generated on the operator’s IPSTAR service. The operator’s next craft, Thaicom-6, is due for launch mid-2013.
Thaicom’s DTV broadband division saw 225,000 new subscribers signed up (y-o-y) taking subscriber totals to 1.3 million.
