The latest data from India’s Information and Broadcasting Ministry shows that there are 681 TV channels operationally on air. A total of 825 channels are licensed although some long-standing licensees who have failed to get their channel up and running are having licenses revoked.
A total of 37 licensees have been more than one year in limbo, with 27 formally asking for extensions to their licenses which means they have to pay extra Performance Bank Guarantees to the ministry.
