Canada’s Telesat gets $133m insurance payout
January 19, 2012
Ottawa-based satellite operator Telesat has received an insurance pay-out of $132.7 million in respect of problems with its Telstar-14R satellite, launched last May.
Telesat’s owner is Loral Space & Communications. The satellite suffered a problem with one of its solar arrays which failed to correctly deploy.
The problems mean the craft will probably only operate for about 12 years instead of the planned 15, and can only handle around 60 per cent of its planned load.
