Jury out on YouView cord cut impact
December 9, 2010
Forecaster Oliver & Ohlbaum’s survey found four per cent of current Freeview homes plan to get YouView instead of pay-TV, and a total 18 per cent of existing pay-TV homes said they are ‘likely’ to switch away from their current provider to use YouView instead.
However, O&O CEO Mark Oliver believes the threat is relatively small predicting a maximum five per cent of Sky subscribers could be affected– Sky itself has predicted a four per cent slow down in subscriber growth.
Oliver points out there is a saturation rate 60 per cent barrier to pay-TV penetration which won’t be affected by YouView but concludes, rather inconclusively, “YouView has yet to be marketed, so we’ll see next year.”
