Billing and OSS

The descent of ARPU and the rise of margin
April/May 2002
Contributed by Convergys and Siebel Systems

In the current climate of uncertainty, telecommunications companies are under increasing pressure to define their business strategy and find tangible ways to reduce their debt burden, cut operating costs and generate new revenue streams. In the face of declining average revenue per user (arpu) figures and the saturation of the handset market , consolidating front and back office applications, such as billing and CRM solutions, provides a realistic and cost effective means for operators to fight back.

A recent Gartner report cites that many companies, quick to recognise the advantages, have attempted to implement their own billing and CRM integration, only for almost half of the deployments to fail, costing time, money and competitive advantage.
"for a carrier with a million subscribers, (this) integrated Unified Customer Management Solution, will save operators over $55.5 million."

At the Billing Systems show, Convergys and Siebel will present the pre-integration of Atlys, the Convergys billing and customer care solution for the wireless market, with Siebel's CRM eCommunications 7 software. The companies forecast that over a period of three years, for a wireless carrier with one million subscribers, its integrated Unified Customer Management Solution, will save operators $55.53 per customer û a grand total of over $55.5 million.

Aside from the obvious cost savings and additional solution benefits such as a faster time-to-market, lowered risk and improved customer service achieved through combined data, this integration begs other interesting, industry-wide questions. For example, how will operators pass on these benefits to the consumer and will it enable them to offer cut-price third generation services to entice new subscribers?

A theatre presentation of the Convergys and Siebel integration will take place at the IIR show. Steven Newton, VP and general manager EMEA, Convergys, and Mikko Heikenen, director industry sales EMEA, Siebel, will also be available during the show.
