Harris Corporation

Harris Corporation will showcase products and solutions for the emerging Mobile TV market at NAB2006 Booths to Highlight Total Content Delivery Solutions.

Broadcast Communications Division's products and systems for the emerging mobile TV market will be on display at NAB2006. Recent launch announcements from two mobile TV networks have signaled the dawn of true, live broadcast television delivery to handheld devices in the United States. Harris' participation in early stage trials across Europe and Australia, well- documented in 2005, has positioned the company as a leading transmission vendor for mobile TV requirements. The company's mobile TV transmission solutions have been used to develop and prove the effectiveness of the DVB-H, FLO(TM) and T-DMB standards for mobile broadcast television. At NAB2006, Harris will highlight its total content delivery solutions for mobile TV that expand far beyond transmission to include infrastructure, broadband software and distribution equipment.

Harris Corporation have further announced it will debut the DL-860 high-definition (HD) and standard-definition (SD) serial digital legalizer in Harris booth #SU2929 at the convention . The DL-860 serial digital legalizer is a powerful new tool that eliminates the guesswork of legalizing HD and SD signals. Broadcast and production professionals use video legalizers to conform the incoming video signal to industry-defined "legal" limited ranges. This is particularly important when converting video between formats (such as HD and SD) that have differently defined "color spaces," and when applying signal processing to modify the video, which could push it beyond "legal" limits.

Iconix Video

Iconix Video Inc., a leading developer of advanced high-definition remote head camera systems, today announced the production release of its HD-RH1 Remote Camera System at this year’s NAB 2006. With a remote head that weighs only 2.5 ounces and a total system weight of less than 4 pounds, the HD-RH1 is the first true High Definition (HD) POV (Point-of-View) 3-CCD camera system to be commercially available as a standard product for broadcast and other HD based acquisition venues.

“The HD-RH1 is a no compromise HD POV remote camera system, specifically targeted at broadcast television and digital cinema applications that place a high premium on size, weight, performance, versatility and affordability,” notes Dan McGuire, CEO of Iconix Video. “The HD-RH1 augments and enhances the HD acquisition capabilities of both broadcasters and cinematographers, empowering them to devise new shooting techniques that would either be too difficult to setup and shoot or too costly to configure.”

The Iconix HD-RH1 incorporates an expansive array of features found only on top-of-the-line HD ENG and EFP camera systems while utilizing an innovative signal processing architecture. This POV camera system, which includes a very robust separate camera head and processing controller unit, is the smallest high performance HD camera in the industry. Unique from most digital cameras whose imager runs at the same rate as the output signal, the HD-RH1 3-CCD prism leverages an asynchronous signal processing architecture which runs the CCD imagers at a completely different clock rate from the output signal, allowing for cooler-running CCDs and more efficient processing. The system can capture and output video in all HD resolutions, including 720p, 1080i and 1080p while supporting frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 frames-per-second (fps). “No other camera this size is capable of acquiring HD imagery at full frame rates,” adds Wayne Upton, founder and CTO of Iconix Video. “Nor one retailing for $16,000 that can output in every HDTV format.”

The camera controller provides the signal I/O and control for the head, and houses the transcoding electronics which enable the unit to capture and provide real-time switching capability between every SMPTE and ATSC standard HDTV format (resolution, frame-rate), and even NTSC and PAL. Retractable push knobs on the front panel allow for gain, color, black and white balance adjustments, as well as having three user assignable presets. Lens and iris control are also available via remote control, and the front panel can be controlled by menu along with programmable gamma functions and electronic shutter enhancements.

“The HD-RH1, with its combination of size, versatility and price-performance ratio, will help to change the market paradigm for HD acquisition, enabling applications in broadcast news, sports and cinematography that were never before possible,” concludes Upton. “Because of its ability to capture HD quality images in such a compact package, significant interest has also been shown by the military, homeland security, industrial monitoring, space exploration and medical imaging markets.”

The Iconix Video HD-RH1 Remote POV Camera System can be seen at NAB Booth SU1650. iQstor Networks, Inc., a leading developer of intelligent and integrated Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions, announced that they will showcase their new iQ2880 4Gb Fibre Channel (FC) storage system at NAB 2006 in Las Vegas, NV, booth SL1832.

The new iQ2880 4Gb FC storage system from iQstor targets rich media applications like HD digital post production, non-linear editing, VOD, content creation, digital intermediate and IPTV that require sustained throughput performance, scalable capacity and broadcast level reliability.

"We’ve designed the iQ2880 to address the evolving high resolution content creation and post production workflows requiring a storage system that can sustain throughputs for real-time HD network collaboration and 2K / 4K digital intermediate applications, while having the capability to scale capacity as the need arises," said Jason Lo, president and CEO of iQstor Networks. "iQ2880’s 4Gb FC to FC connectivity offers very fast throughput at up to 1600MB/s per array and the system can scale to 120TB – more than enough storage for most online projects. The iQ2880 can be populated with FC and/or SATA disk drives to optimize performance or capacity and its embedded storage management software guarantees ease-of -use and management."

The iQ2880 was developed to ensure investment protection, being able to utilize both FC and SATA disk technologies and scaling capacity as needed. Ideally suited for tiered-storage environments where cost is a factor, iQ2880’s capacity can be scaled through connectivity with the J2880 SBOD disk enclosure, creating a system with high performance FC drives for primary storage and low cost SATA drives for secondary storage.

The iQ2880 addresses other key concerns facing the video industry that focus on interoperability, reliability and ease-of-use. Its open system architecture let’s users connect their favorite servers with little or no ramp up time. Reliability is assured with iQ2880’s dual redundant RAID controllers and the integrated software affords not only ease-of-use, but offer built-in data services like virtualization, snapshot, mirroring, remote replication and policy-based storage provisioning.

"The iQ2880 delivers on our promise of providing a robust and cost-effective platform with the latest in storage technology at an exceptional value," concluded Lo. "Our iQ2880 offers unsurpassed availability, reliability, manageability, data integrity and enterprise-level functionality that is becoming a standard requirement for a wide range of rich media based businesses and mission critical environments today."

Omneon

New Omneon Spectrum MediaDirector 4202

Extending its leadership in providing media server technology that supports a wide range of file-based workflows, Omneon will introduce at NAB2006 a new
MediaDirector component -- within its flagship Spectrum line -- that doublesthe overall system bandwidth to support both higher channel counts and higher IP throughput on a single system. The new MediaDirector 4202 incorporates the latest advanced IT-based components including multiple IEEE 1394b (800 Mbps) busses for more real-time data throughput, six Fibre Channel connectors for additional Fibre Channel storage bandwidth, and two additional Gigabit Ethernet ports. With these expanded standard interfaces, the Omneon Spectrum is now an even more powerful solution for broadcasters who need a system capable of supporting a higher number of HD channels as
well as providing enough IP bandwidth to support extensive collaborative browsing or editing environments.

As a key component of the Omneon Spectrum media server system, the MediaDirector 4202 further extends Omneon's concept of Smart Scalability, which provides the industry's most scalable, flexible architecture to allow broadcasters to expand the channels, capacity, and network bandwidth of
their media server system in small, manageable increments. The MediaDirector 4202 will support all of the company's current storage and media interface components, allowing systems to be configured precisely to match customer
requirements for media type(s) and storage capacity.

Additional HD Format Support

At NAB2006 Omneon will again extend its multiformat HD capabilities by adding support for Avid's DNxHD format. With this system upgrade, any Omneon Spectrum system will be able to record and play back DNxHD files using Avid's DNxchange codec device. Recorded DNxHD clips are immediately available for editing by Avid editing systems, and finished clips exported to the Spectrum server can be immediately played out. The addition of DNxHD support to the range of HD formats supported by Omneon follows the recent announcement of the Spectrum systems' ability to ingest and play back HDV material. Support for HDV enables users to ingest HDV material into a Spectrum server from Apple Final Cut Pro and play back HDV material stored in the system directly to air. For playback, the HDV content is automatically scaled to a full 1920-line HD signal. This approach allows both native HD material and HDV material to be mixed on a single timeline for back-to-back playout.

Omneon ProBrowse System

Extending the utility and functionality of the Omneon Spectrum media server system, Omneon will also show at NAB2006 its new system for creating and viewing low resolution versions (proxies) of full-resolution material contained within an Omneon Spectrum system. The new Omneon ProBrowse System monitors content directories within a Spectrum server and automatically generates low resolution versions of all material, including any new material being ingested or copied into the Omneon Spectrum system via FTP. The proxies are then immediately available for viewing on any networked PC using an MPEG 1-based viewer such as Windows Media Player or QuickTime Player. The proxy files created by the Omneon ProBrowse System are also immediately available to any broadcast application such as automation systems, newsroom systems, and content management systems.

Furthermore, Omneon Video Networks will showcase its new ClipTool Pro application, which enables users of the Omneon Spectrum media server to monitor and control playout and record functionality via an easy-to use graphical user interface. Part of Omneon's MediaTools suite, the ClipTool Pro application provides simple, cost effective control for ingest, quality assurance, and playout operations.

Omnibus Systems

OmniBus Systems' Revolutionary iTX Software-Based Production/Transmission Solution is to Debut at NAB2006

A revolutionary approach to software-based
transmission and production using standard IT hardware and Windows Mediatechnology will be launched by OmniBus Systems at this year's NAB exhibition. The product of 15 years of innovation in high-end automation, the new OmniBus iTX intelligent transmission software replicates all functions of master control to a very high level of sophistication, allowing small and mid-sized broadcasters to make a measured migration from the traditional hardware-based world toward a next-generation, software-based transmission facility.

The iTX system software fulfills a variety of roles: video server, master control, graphics, and logo inserter with functionality including automation, ingest, editing, and basic content management. This format-independent and bit rate-agnostic solution can mix DV, MPEG1 through MPEG4, AVI, and WMV formats freely and will scale incoming media of any resolution to the appropriate output format, enabling SD and HD content to be mixed on the same playlist. Files can be ingested from tape or line using a real-time encode into a Windows Media file, or delivered to the server as a new file. Content also may be sourced directly from an existing broadcast server or from any industry-standard editor. iTX playout is based on OmniBus' latest state-of-the-art automation system, which features a flexible and intuitive drag-and-drop interface that allows operators to monitor and control multiple channels and schedules on-screen simultaneously. Captions, logos, vision effects, and even audio effects are built into the interface, and a preview function allows the user to validate complete sequences before they air.

iTX technology is compatible with existing automation systems, so broadcasters can use it to run a conventional broadcast chain or a new-generation iTX transmission chain. Available with PCs optimized with the latest AMD chipsets, as well as modifications that maximize bandwidth use and real-time video processing, iTX serves as an unusually easy-to-maintain and cost-effective playout solution for moderately sized transmission facilities, emerging transmission markets, disaster recovery systems, or companies launching IPTV services.
