BBC homepage focus on iPlayer and tablets

September 21, 2011

The BBC has launched a new version of its homepage in beta. The emphasis is shifted from news, sport and weather to the iPlayer, which was still in its infancy when the current homepage was launched in 2008.

The new site is clearly built for the tablet age. The entire homepage fits inside the screen of an iPad, which can handle less than half of the current BBC homepage.

Phil Fearnley, general manager of News and Knowledge, BBC Future Media, said: “The BBC Homepage attracts over 9 million unique browsers a week across devices and the new page is designed to meet the challenge of serving this mass audience by showcasing the breadth of what we create on the web, whilst enabling the simple filtering which users have come to expect.”
